Herm of Zeus Amun

Amidst ancient Egyptian lore, Amun, deity of Thebes, merged with radiant solar deities. His sacred ram, revered by all, became an integral part of his mystique in Greco-Roman iconography, often depicted with majestic curved horns adorning either side of the head. As a guardian of hope and protector from harm, he was fervently worshipped for his extraordinary abilities to vanquish every malevolent force, eradicate disease, and rescue those stranded at sea. In 332 BC, Alexander the Great sought divine guidance in the temple of Siwah before embarking on his epochal conquest of Asia, only to discover that he was, in truth, the offspring of this mighty divinity. It appears that the revered image of Zeus Amun was consistently represented in the guise of a herm, with an exemplary prototype from Herculaneum serving as a testament to the original created in the mid-fifth century BC.
