The human figure depicted as a herm is essentially a statue, frequently featuring a head and possibly a torso, atop a plain rectangular lower section. Typically, if the subject is male, sculptors will carve male genitalia at an appropriate height. This particular herm portrays two men with distinct facial characteristics, facing away from each other, their rear heads connected. Hermes are named as such because the head of the Greek god Hermes was frequently used, or derived from the Greek word for "blocks of stone," which initially had no connection to Hermes whatsoever. This style of sculpture originated in ancient Greece and was later adopted by the Romans. A revival of this art form occurred during the Renaissance period.
