In ancient Greece, it was a widespread practice to set the head of Hermes atop small pillars as a guardian deity: this distinctive form of representation gave rise to the sculptural typology of the herm, named after the god Hermes himself. In the Roman era, herms representing the gods evolved into ornamental objects.
