This sculpture captures Hercules, a legendary Roman figure and deity, in a pivotal moment when he's firing his bow. He was essentially the equivalent of Heracles, the Greek demigod son of Zeus (Roman counterpart Jupiter) and mortal Alcmene. In classical mythology, Hercules is renowned for his remarkable physical prowess and numerous epic adventures that spanned vast distances. When tackling the sixth of his twelve Labors, Hercules employed his bow to vanquish the Stymphalian birds, ferocious creatures that terrorized humanity by devouring human flesh, boasting sharp brazen claws, wings, and beaks. They also used their feathers as projectiles, making them formidable opponents. The birds inhabited a lake near Stymphalus in Arcadia. As soon as Hercules received his assignment, Athena gifted him with a brass rattle, which he utilized to startle the birds, ultimately dispatching them one by one with his arrows as they took flight.
