Hercules
myminifactory
This sculpture is a contemporary reworking of various earlier statues depicting Hercules. It can only be identified by the skin of the Nemean Lion draped over its head, aside from that the figure has very ambiguous features. The Nemean Lion is characteristic with many depictions of Hercules (such as the Statue of Hercules at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York) and was often used as a motif for a series of sculptures representing emperors to elevate their status from political to celestial, a practice common with Alexander the Great (who had a 'Lion pelted' bust made). He had long been associated with mythic heroes. Bearded Hercules at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York was created between A.D. 68-98. Alexander the Great as Hercules is often depicted.
