Hercules and Deianira

Hercules' sculpture shows the demigod standing alongside his second wife, mortal Deianira. Many myths mention her and believe she played a crucial role in her husband's adventures. Earlier stories often portray Deianira as accidentally causing Hercules' death due to her love for him, presenting her as a sympathetic character who suffers a tragic end. However, Seneca created an alternative version of Deianira, one that is less sympathetic, in line with the meaning of her name: "man-destroyer".
