Hercules and Cacus

Cacus resided in a cave on what would become Rome's site in Italy, striking terror into nearby residents with his taste for human flesh. His gruesome habit of nailing victims' heads to the cave door did not go unnoticed. Eventually, Hercules overcame Cacus. According to Evander, Hercules had been pasturing cattle he stole from Geryon near Cacus' lair when the monster took a liking to them. Eight cows and four bulls disappeared while Hercules slept as Cacus slyly dragged them by their tails, creating a trail pointing away from his den. When Hercules awoke and prepared to leave, he heard plaintive noises coming from the cave, followed by a single cow's low moan. Enraged, Hercules charged towards the cave. A terrified Cacus blocked the entrance with an enormous boulder that refused to move, prompting Hercules to rip at the mountain top to reach his adversary. Cacus unleashed a blast of fire and smoke as he attacked Hercules, who countered with tree branches and massive rocks the size of millstones. Losing patience, Hercules leapt into the cave and targeted the area where the smoke was thickest. He grabbed Cacus and strangled the monster, earning widespread acclaim for his bravery. According to Virgil in Book VIII of the Aeneid, Hercules gripped Cacus so tightly that his eyes popped out and there was no blood left in his throat.
