King Diomedes kept four ferocious mares that were fed a steady diet of human victims. Tasked with capturing these monstrous creatures, Eurystheus ordered Hercules (Heracles) to take on this perilous mission. With ruthless efficiency, he struck down the king and tossed his lifeless body into the enclosure where the mares eagerly devoured their gruesome meal. Once the beasts were fully tamed by this horrific spectacle, Hercules was able to lead them away without encountering any resistance.
