This bust portrays Herbert Spencer (1820-1903), a visionary philosopher who pioneered a system of philosophy rooted in the doctrine of evolution. He penned 'First Principles' in 1862 and 'The Principles of Biology' in 1864, leaving an indelible mark on his contemporaries. As a member of the esteemed club along with Huxley and Tyndall, Spencer also made significant contributions to psychology, education, sociology, and ethics. He was a stalwart advocate for individual freedom and limited government intervention. Crafted by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm (1834-90) in 1884, the marble bust was bequeathed to the National Portrait Gallery in 1904 by Spencer himself.
