Heraldic Escutcheon Template (small version)
myminifactory
This smaller two-part version of my Heraldic Escutcheon Template is perfect for 3D printers with smaller printbeds. It retains all the same sizes as the original template, but now spans across two smaller templates. I've always enjoyed creating illuminated borders and drawings inspired by medieval manuscripts, but designing heraldic devices always proves to be a challenge. In the past, I relied on tracing escutcheon shapes onto paper using a light box, but this method is not always feasible, especially when working with thicker paper stock. To address this issue, I've created a template that makes it easy to lay out scrolls, awards, and other items requiring an escutcheon shape without having to draw them freehand. This template employs the "1/3rd radius" construction method commonly used in SCA documents and features eleven graduated sizes ranging from 14mm to 50mm tall (about 1/2" to 2" high). To facilitate easy removal, I've incorporated undercuts around the outside of the template, but these are not present within the shield shapes themselves. This design allows for use with pencils, silverpoint, and styli, although ink may seep under the edges and compromise the integrity of the work.
