Heraclitus

Heraclitus of Ephesus, a prominent pre-Socratic Greek philosopher and native of Ephesus, was born into a distinguished family within the Persian Empire. Despite his esteemed background, little is known about Heraclitus' early life and education; however, he considered himself self-taught and a trailblazer in wisdom. His reclusive lifestyle and paradoxical philosophy, which emphasizes humanity's unconscious nature, earned him the nicknames "The Obscure" and "Weeping Philosopher". This bust of Heraclitus has an unclear origin and may have been refined from various other original representations of the philosopher. The piece itself was cast by E. Gastecloux in 1792 using a mold from The Academy of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg.
