Hercules had to bring back Cerberus alive, the three-headed dog that guarded the Underworld, a world of the dead from which no human being could return. With his bare hands, he overpowered the animal and brought it to Eurystheus, who was terrified by its presence. Eurystheus ordered Hercules to take the monster back where he found it. Archaeologists identified this labor through comparison with images on sarcophagi and mosaics that depicted this theme in vivid detail.
