Infante Dom Henrique de Avis, Duke of Viseu (4 March 1394 – 13 November 1460), better known as Henry the Navigator, was a key player in 15th-century Portuguese politics and the early days of the Portuguese Empire. Through his leadership, he is credited with initiating the Age of Discoveries. As the third child of King John I, Henry played a crucial role in developing Portuguese exploration and maritime trade with other continents through systematic exploration of Western Africa, Atlantic Ocean islands, and new route searches. King John I founded the House of Aviz, and Henry encouraged his father to conquer Ceuta (1415), the Muslim port on the North African coast across the Strait of Gibraltar from the Iberian Peninsula. He discovered opportunities in the Saharan trade routes that ended there and became fascinated with Africa, particularly the Christian legend of Prester John and the expansion of Portuguese trade. Henry is revered as the patron of Portuguese exploration. This object is part of "Scan The World."
