Henry George Liddell was a classical scholar who served as Dean of Christ Church, Oxford from 1855-1891, where he implemented numerous administrative reforms. He is the father of Alice Liddell, whose life inspired Lewis Carroll to write the 'Alice' books. A marble sculpture depicting Henry George Liddell was created by Henry Richard Hope-Pinker in 1888 and features intricate details incised into its surface. The sculpture is on permanent display at London's National Portrait Gallery.
