The fountain was installed in 1940 to honor Rhode Island U.S. Senator Henry Bowen Anthony, who served as a U.S. senator (1859-1884), Rhode Island governor (1849-1851), and publisher of The Providence Journal. Designed in a modern style by the Providence firm Jackson, Robertson & Adams, the fountain is the centerpiece of Lippitt Park, where Hope Street meets Blackstone Boulevard, near the Pawtucket city line.
