The fountain was installed in 1940 to honor U.S. Senator Henry Bowen Anthony of Rhode Island, who served as senator (1859-1884), governor (1849-1851), and publisher of The Providence Journal. Designed by the modern-style firm Jackson, Robertson & Adams of Providence, the fountain is the centerpiece of Lippitt Park, where Hope Street meets Blackstone Boulevard near the Pawtucket city line.
