Hielmstierne and Thorvaldsen remained unknown to each other since the sculptor was only 10 years old when Hielmstierne passed away. Nevertheless, in 1807, Thorvaldsen received a commission for a portrait bust of Henrik Hielmstierne from his son-in-law. It is likely that the bust was created in 1812 after a plaster cast of a sculpture by Hartman Beeken and J.L. Lund's original drawing.
