A rare glass bottle recovered from the 1700s slave ship Henrietta Marie showcases a distinctive late 17th/early 18th century style known as an "onion" bottle, named after its bulbous body and elongated neck resembling that of an onion. Typically used to store liquor, these bottles were in high demand on board ships due to their unique shape, which allowed them to remain upright even in rough seas. The 11.7cm tall, 14.3cm diameter Henrietta Marie bottle is one of a dozen found at the shipwreck site and originally had a dark green glass color that has since degraded into an irregular appearance after being submerged in the sea for centuries. While it remains unclear whether these bottles were part of a liquor cargo or intended for crew use, their significance as artifacts from this pivotal era in history is undeniable.
