A small, unassuming stoneware container measures 10.2 centimeters across and stands at 13.3 cm tall, originating from the 1700 English slave ship Henrietta Marie. The vessel bears a striking resemblance to a bearded man believed to be a satirical representation of the prominent Catholic theologian Roberto Bellarmino. Such containers frequently held liquor and were utilized by Protestants to mock Bellarmino's strong stance against alcohol consumption. Bellarmine jugs also occasionally served as "witch bottles," filled with mystical charms and urine, used as anti-witchcraft devices. No contents were discovered in the Henrietta Marie container, leaving its intended function a mystery.
