Humans float on the surface to indicate the location of planes underwater, thanks to their buoyancy. Locating transmitters are often placed inside them, with a solar panel that can provide power for decades or even years without any issues. In addition, some devices may contain backup information from the black box. The way these items are attached varies - some float freely while others are held in place by a string.
