Helical rain/radiation shield for weather sensors with sensor mounting
thingiverse
I created a compact weather shield for outdoor temperature/RH/barometric pressure sensors that can be printed without supports and installed upside down. The design is tailored to fit a standard breakout board used for the BME280 sensor, but any other sensor that fits inside can also be used. The standoffs are designed to allow either #4-40 or 3mm screws to self-tap, making it easy to install. If you need different hole spacing or size, let me know and I can make a simple edit. This weather shield is an updated version of my previous design: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3178180. The main improvements are the addition of a retaining system and a mount for the sensor. In my earlier version, I had glued the sensor in place without any protection, which made it prone to damage from dust and water droplets. Commercial housings for BME280 sensors usually feature a mesh screen that allows air to pass through while keeping out dust and water droplets. To replicate this, I designed the sensor mount to fit a garden hose strainer, providing the necessary mesh protection. The shield itself has a ring protruding downwards with an internal retaining groove. The sensor mount features springy teeth on its periphery that click into the retaining groove, securing the sensor housing while keeping it thermally isolated. This arrangement also allows easy removal of the sensor assembly. The sensor mount has a wire pass-through hole with a drip shield to prevent water from entering and create a pocket for sealing around the wire, secured with hot melt adhesive. There are several mounting styles available: an old flat flange design, a new standoff version, and one with a perforated straight arm that allows installation on an existing bracket using screws or cable ties.
