Helical or "dry fixed" gears provide an improvement over spur gears due to their tooth structure; the leading edges of their teeth are angled with respect to the axis of rotation. This curvature, forming a segment of a helix, enables helical gears to be meshed in parallel and crossed orientations. Parallel orientation is most common as it involves shafts being parallel while non-parallel shafts result in "skew gears".
