In Greek mythology Helen was the daughter of Zeus and was renowned for her stunning beauty. She was married to Menelaus, King of Sparta, but while her husband was away, she was abducted by Paris, a Trojan prince, whom she later wedded. This marked the beginning of a long and bloody war between the Greeks and Trojans. Another version of this artwork is housed in the Palazzo Albrizzi in Venice and was seen by Lord Byron in 1812, who wrote: "In this cherished marble scene Above the creations and thoughts of humanity What nature could, but did not, do And beauty and Canova can!"
