About This Project:What’s better than super cute yet functional desk decor? This hedgehog is 9.5 cm x 4 cm x 8 cm. No assembly is required. Good news! This project was part of a set with 3 parts, all of them animal-themed desk decor. Check out the other components to this set: Whale tape dispenser: https://www.printables.com/model/192218-whale-themed-tape-dispenserDog paper clip holder: https://www.printables.com/model/192216-dog-paper-clip-holder Our Objective:Recent analysis by the Staples finance department has concluded that sales for desktop organization products have declined in recent years. The company would like to ramp up their profits in this area by enhancing the aesthetic nature of these products. Your group has been hired to design a set of theme-based organizational products. Your team will design a set of office supplies that are tied together with a common theme. The idea is that the customer will not want to buy just one; they will want to buy the whole set. The Design Process:As a group, we first went online and searched for ideas. We liked the idea of creating office supplies to look like animals (mostly because they were super adorable). We saw this one picture:Instead of making a model of the animal as it is in real life, we had the idea to form our creations by taking a picture of the animal and extruding it to make it 3-D, similar to the picture above. We took an outline of a hedgehog (below) and outlined it, then extruded the shape to make the body. Then, we cut out the face and eyes. The hardest part was making the holes for the pencils. We first extruded it to only have 2 rows of holes. First, we had to determine the size of the holes by measuring pencils and colored pencils. Then, we drew out a few circles on the top of the body and cut downwards, and then added patterned the circles to add more holes. This had to be done in multiple cuts because of the angled body. One issue while creating this design was creating the holes in such a way that the holes did not overlap. As seen below, the rows of holes do not intersect. This was difficult to do because the body was small and the holes had to have a certain diameter. We later decided that it would be more stable and more practical to be able to add more pencils, so we had to redo the holes to have 3 rows. Then, after beginning to print the first time, we discovered that the holes were too small. Below is a picture of our first attempt. We went back and checked the measurements of the holes to the diameter of some pencils and colored pencils. Then, we changed the diameter size to make them a bit bigger, then printed it again to get the final design.
