Heavy Particulate Air filter for Craftsman Vacuum (cmcvs001d1)

Disclaimer: I am not a vacuum design engineer. I am not a student of airflow management. I am not a physicist. I do have a working understanding of aerodynamics and physics which I used to design the following.

So we have one of these Craftsman cordless vacuums (cmcvs001d1) at work and long story short someone threw away the in canister air filter that was designed to keep large debris out of the fine dust filter in the back of the canister. With this piece gone the vacuum was no longer working very well as the debris was not getting directed into the chamber and kept restricting air flow thus resulting in a severely decreased flow and pressure. After many fruitless attempts to find a place to order a replacement of this part, apparently they just want you to buy a full retail replacement, I decided to try my hand at designing a replacement part … this is that model.

As I said before I am not a “professional” when it comes to any of the concepts involved, however I did know that I needed to try and do 3 things with this design.
1) Come up with a design that prevents larger particulate, debris, and trash from getting into the fine cloth air filter thus maintaining airflow.
2) Design the filter with enough open area to allow for air flow close to the theoretical max unrestricted air flow at the rear filter so as to not reduce the power of the vacuum.
3) Design the filter in such a way that it helps to promote a cyclonic flow of air in the canister to help prevent items from getting stuck to the filter thus helping to ensure that airflow and vacuum pressure are maintained.

The filter that I designed will probably not win any awards for its looks, however I can speak on the fact that initial reports from work on its effectiveness at achieving the points above are positive. This is a highly specific item for use on a very small group of vacuums (cmcvs001d1) that Craftsman puts out so I have no idea if it will be of any use to other people, however since I could not find an official replacement, or any other model online ready made I have decided to post this up in the event that someone else is in the same position we were at work and just wants to print a solution without having to think very much about it.

Designed in Fusion 360

When sliced in Cura it shows 105g 35.08m of material useage and a 8 - 12 hour print depending on settings.
