Heater Block

Revised Design 1.1, dated March 30th, 2013, features several enhancements: a 6.5mm diameter bore that's 1.5mm deep for accommodating Makerbot's MK7 and MK8 nozzles mounting; an additional 2.5mm diameter hole on the opposite side for the thermistor; and tumbling to ensure a smooth, uniform surface finish. The heater cartridge, which serves as an affordable alternative to power resistors, has solved the problem of mounting on M6 threaded barrels. This design is compatible with Makergear hot ends, replaces the Makerbot Stepstruder's MK7 heater block, and should work with other M6 threaded barrels/hot ends. DIY kits include a block, cartridge, thermistor, PTFE sleeves, and connectors. For instructions on manual or CNC machining, refer to the PDF drawing provided. Manual assembly involves cutting an 18.5mm piece from a 3/8" x 3/4" 6061-T6 extruded bar (preferably using a band saw), marking and drilling hole centers as per the drawing, and tapping M3 and M6 holes according to the provided instructions. Tapping should be done on a drill press for accuracy, while manual tapping is suitable for the M3 set screw hole. Secure the thermistor in the 2.5mm hole using kapton tape or steel epoxy.
