The shell-and-tube type of heat exchanger is a common and widely used design that consists of a cylindrical shell surrounding a bundle of tubes. The fluid to be cooled or heated flows through the tubes, while the other fluid flows over the outside surface of the tubes in the annular space between the tubes and the shell.
