One of three wise monkeys that go by the phrase See no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil. They are Mizaru, Iwazaru, and Kikazaru. There's a statue of one in the stables, said to ward off disease in horses and have been the guardian angel of horses for a long time. It is believed an actual monkey was kept there before. The three monkeys of Mizaru, Iwazaru, and Kikazaru at Toshogu in Japan are very well known, but this one here takes second place to another sculpture made from eight pieces of the same kind. This phrase has become a popular saying in Japan too. Each little monkey is shown closing its eyes, mouth, and ears so it won't be exposed to bad things, teaching children obedience by example. This can also mean don't listen to bad news, or "Hear no evil". Closing one's ears is the way not to hear something. In one funny drawing, a mischievous little monkey tries to block out bad words by shutting its ear with a banana.
