A beautifully weathered C18th headstone sits atop a grave in North Leith Churchyard, its condition heavily deteriorated due to the passage of time and the elements. Once split, it now proudly displays a stunning Memento Mori design featuring a skull and crossbones - an unusual yet captivating sight - accompanied by a winged angel and a collection of tools. The inscription on the southern side reveals fragments of a poignant story: "James Gray Freeman of Canongate departed this life on May 26th, 1716, at the tender age of 29 years... Margaret Madden(?), whose life was cut short at just 36 years old..." A subtle reference to another James can be seen in the lower section, worn by time and neglect.
