In Pharaonic Egypt, headrests served as wooden pillows used to support the head while sleeping. The headrest had a flat base typically wider than the upper portion to help it remain stable. The upper portion usually had a concave section to cradle the head of the user. They could have been made from wood, stone, ceramic, or ivory.
