This is a beautifully crafted wooden headrest from ancient Egypt, dating back to around 1550-1070 BC. Headrests like this one served as pillows, supporting the space between the head and shoulders during sleep, just like modern pillows do today. These early pillow-like headrests were made in various materials and decorated with different designs, which often featured apotropaic symbols - powerful charms meant to keep evil spirits at bay while a person slept peacefully. In ancient Egypt, it was common for people to be buried with their headrests, so they could use them again in the afterlife.
