Headache Caryatid

Headache Caryatid

myminifactory

This caryatid, once missing its head, forearms, and toes, now stands draped in cloth. The head, a plaster cast, was added in the early 20th century when it was discovered that the original had been mounted in a Renaissance restoration. Instead, a new head was fashioned from another caryatid in the same collection. Both heads are preserved in this collection today. Originally used to adorn and support buildings, these statues played a crucial role in Roman architecture. Crafted during the Hadrianic period, one of these caryatids may have been gifted by the island of Cres' inhabitants to Antonio Grimani, who received it from Ossero.
