Head with lead eyes at Musée Zadkine, Paris, France
myminifactory
This head, named after its lead eyes that have long since vanished, takes its identity from the metal that once filled them. Embodying Zadkine's post-war era craftsmanship, it showcases his pursuit of form stylization to its limits. The simplification of planes and elimination of details create an austere appearance. Certain features are distorted beyond recognition: the skull has transformed into a helmet, the nose bridge stretches, the face flattens, the eyebrow arch is reduced to basic geometry, and the naso-labial fold becomes exaggerated. Zadkine's style closely resembles Modigliani's; they were familiar with each other's work. This art form diverges from nature-based imitation, instead opting for a free-form reconstruction of shape, a true exercise in invention.
