Head of Varlam Shalamov

This is a tribute to Varlam Tikhonovich Shalamov, a Russian writer, journalist, and poet who also survived the harsh conditions of the Gulag labor camps in Kolyma's Arctic region. His imprisonment lasted from 1937 to 1951 due to his support for Leon Trotsky and praise for Ivan Bunin, an anti-Soviet writer. In 1946, Shalamov was close to death but managed to become a medical assistant while still a prisoner, a role he held until the end of his sentence in 1953 and for two additional years after being released. From 1954 to 1978, he wrote a series of short stories about his experiences in the labor camps, which were compiled into six volumes known as The Kolyma Tales. Initially published in English translation starting in the 1960s, these books were eventually released in their original Russian form but only became officially available in the Soviet Union in 1987 during the post-glasnost era. The Kolyma Tales are considered Shalamov's magnum opus and a definitive chronicle of life in the labor camps. Despite his anti-Stalin stance and horrific experience in the labor camps, Shalamov remained a pro-Communist and pro-Soviet figure until his death and disliked how The Kolyma Tales were used for propaganda purposes in the West. I witnessed it all: scorching sand and biting snow, raging storms and sweltering heat. What can one human endure? I have experienced everything. * * * Raised by a multitude of hands, fluttering hearts beat as one within me. The barbed wire circle that confined us was our crown of thorns. * * * Let the relentless rain of the century fall upon us like a warning sign - a harbinger of all that was to come. We were struck with an icy cruel lash, pounding against our shoulders. * * * Our destinies are simple masks we wear to conceal the truth. One great fate binds us together. Tales of the one who fears publicity and remains chained to the rock like slaves. * * * It is easier to face the harsh conditions in the coal mines than to confront your own demons. Easier for anyone to walk their path than to find the courage to be yourself. * * * I promise you, Russia may seem distant, but enemies will not forgive. I'll return from the heavens, and my tale will be told.
