Head of the god Amun

The braided beard and flat cap with remaining double plumes unmistakably point to Amun as this god's identity. His small eyes are separated by a noticeable curved depression from his rounded brow ridge; his broad face features full lips with sharp contours, and from the side, a slightly drooping chin is evident. These facial characteristics closely resemble those of King Tutankhamun and serve as strong evidence that the piece was commissioned by him. The statue was undoubtedly crafted for Karnak, Amun's grand temple at Thebes, as part of Tutankhamun's efforts to restore the god's monuments that had been damaged or destroyed during Akhenaten's reign. Several sculptures depict Amun touching the crown of Tutankhamun, who stands or kneels before him in these works of art. This head appears disproportionately large for such a composition; therefore, it is likely that the head originally belonged to a large freestanding or seated figure of the god.
