Head of Silenus

myminifactory

This ancient marble head is believed to be that of the Greek God Silenus, originating from the Hellenistic era, and was discovered in the Echmoun sanctuary within the Lebanese city of Sidon. The sculpture had been pilfered during Lebanon's tumultuous civil war but was eventually recovered by the Lebanese Administration of Archaeological Antiquities. In Greek mythology, Silenus is famously recognized as a trusted companion and mentor to Dionysus, the god of wine. When depicted significantly older, this deity is commonly referred to as Papposilenus.
