This is an exquisite limestone representation of Serapis. The Greco-Egyptian god Serapis, also known as Sarapis, worshipped in association with Apis, the sacred Egyptian bull and Osorapis when deceased, had his cult first discovered at Memphis. As a god of the underworld he was reintroduced by Ptolemy I Soter as a new deity with many Hellenic aspects in Alexandria. The head was found at the Temple of Sarapis in Soli.
