Donatello skillfully crafted his iconic statue of St. George for the Florence guild of armorers and swordmakers. The statue, like its counterpart St. Mark's, was meant to adorn the guild's niche within the Orsanmichele building. However, due to the guild's modest size, it could only afford a marble rendition, as opposed to a bronze one. St. George, the patron saint of armorers, was revered for his military prowess in both the Byzantine East and among Crusaders battling Muslim forces in the Holy Land. His legendary tale of triumph over the dragon gained widespread recognition through the Golden Legend collection in the late 13th century.
