A philosopher, painter, sculptor, and educator, his impact continues to shape the country's artistic landscape. In 1913, he became the first Indian to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his groundbreaking book Gitanjali (Song Offerings). Tagore was knighted by the British in 1915, but he refused the honor after the Amritsar Massacre in 1919, where unarmed civilians were brutally slaughtered by British troops during the Vaisakhi festival.
