Philoctetes, or Philocthetes, was the son of King Poeas of Meliboea in Thessaly. He was a renowned Greek hero and exceptional archer who participated in the epic Trojan War. Four ancient Greek plays centered around Philoctetes were written by prominent tragedians, yet only Sophocles' Philoctetes has survived to this day. Fragments remain from Aeschylus' Philoctetes at Troy and Euripides' Philoctetes, which were unfortunately lost over time. Additionally, Homer's Iliad Book 2 mentions Philoctetes' exile on Lemnos due to a snake bite, his eventual recall by the Greeks, and Diomedes' retrieval of him as told in the lost epic Little Iliad. Philoctetes distinguished himself at Troy by killing three men.
