Head of Orpheus
myminifactory
This head serves as a replica of a basalt sculpture housed at The Glyptothek in Munich (inv. 523). The sculpture portrays a young man, but is thought to be a Roman reproduction of an original statue of Orpheus from approximately 460 BC. The original work was discovered in Cumae, South Italy, and acquired by Munich in 1926 from a collection in Geneva. Orpheus is a legendary musician, poet, and prophet in ancient Greek mythology. His stories revolve around his ability to captivate all living things with his music, as depicted in the mythological tale of Orpheus and Eurydice.
