Each new king of Benin commemorates his father with a portrait cast in brass, crafted by skilled artisans from the brass fraternity. This head is believed to have been made for the funeral of warrior king Ozolua, conducted by his son Esigye in 1505, or at the funeral of Esigye himself in 1551. Despite being a likeness of an individual, this type of commemorative portrait is highly stylized. The beaded headdress and collar represent the Oba's coral regalia. Coral from the Mediterranean was a symbol of great wealth and status. This object belongs to "Scan The World". Scan the World is a non-profit initiative introduced by MyMiniFactory, which aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures, artworks and landmarks from around the globe for public access at no cost.
