Niobe is a prominent figure in Greek mythology whose story was first told in Homer's Iliad and has since been widely featured in numerous writings and artworks. The origins of this sculpture are unclear, but it is believed to have originated from the collections and workshops of Pierre and Francois Lucas. At the heart of Niobe's myth is the concept of hybris, which explores the consequences of acting with arrogance towards the gods. In her narrative, Niobe boasted that her fourteen children were superior to Leto, who was the mother of Apollo and Artemis. The twins responded to Niobe's arrogance by killing all of her children in front of her eyes. Her husband soon took his own life, and Niobe fled to Mount Sipylus, where she pleaded with the gods to end her suffering. Zeus took pity on her and transformed her into a rock, turning her emotions to stone. However, even as a rock, Niobe's grief continued unabated. Her tears flowed endlessly from the rock, creating a stream that stands as a poignant reminder of a mother's eternal sorrow.
