Head of Medusa

In ancient Greek mythology, Medusa was a terrifying creature known as a Gorgon, typically depicted as a winged human female with a repulsive face and deadly venomous snakes replacing her hair. Anyone who dared to look at her face would be instantly petrified. Most accounts describe her as the offspring of Phorcys and Ceto, but the Roman author Hyginus claimed Medusa was actually the daughter of Gorgon and Ceto instead. According to Hesiod and Aeschylus, she resided and met her demise on a remote island called Sarpedon, which may have been located near the region of Cisthene. Meanwhile, the 2nd-century BCE writer Dionysios Skytobrachion placed her in Libya, an area where Herodotus believed the Berbers had originated the myth as part of their ancient faith.
