This head belongs to a massive group sculpture known as the East Pediment, a masterpiece of the Classical period. The Aegina Temple's east pediment is an epic depiction of the first Trojan war, not the one famously chronicled by Homer, but rather the legendary conflict between Heracles and the king of Troy, Laomedon. Six distinct characters are shown at various stages of the intense battle unfolding before us.
