Dionysus was the powerful Olympian god of wine, vibrant vegetation, intense pleasure, ecstatic festivity, unbridled madness, and wild frenzy. He was often depicted as a mature, bearded deity or a handsome, long-haired youth. His iconic attributes included the majestic thyrsos, a sturdy pine-cone tipped staff, a goblet for drinking, and an elegant crown of ivy. He usually led a troop of energetic Satyrs and wild female devotees known as Mainades. Displayed at the prestigious Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke in Munich, this renowned museum showcases an impressive collection of classical paintings and exquisite sculpture from ancient Greece and Rome, spanning the 7th century BC to the 5th century AD.
