Asclepius was a powerful god of medicine in ancient Greek religion and mythology. As the embodiment of healing, his daughters embodied different aspects of medical arts; Hygieia represented health, cleanliness, and sanitation, Iaso oversaw recuperation from illness, Aceso managed the healing process, Aglæa/Ægle exemplified beauty, splendor, glory, magnificence, and adornment, and Panacea was the goddess of universal remedy. As a son of Apollo, Asclepius shared his father's epithet Paean, meaning "the Healer". The iconic rod of Asclepius, a staff entwined with snakes, remains an enduring symbol of medicine today. Those who served this god as physicians and attendants were known as the Therapeutae of Asclepius.
