This is a stunning marble head of a statue honoring Artemis, one of the mighty Twelve Olympians. As the daughter of Zeus and Leto and the twin sister of Apollo, Artemis stands out as a powerful figure, also mother to the legendary Orion. She was revered as the goddess of hunting, wild animals, and the untamed wilderness. During the 5th century BC, her importance grew exponentially as she became synonymous with the moon, solidifying her position as one of the most formidable goddesses in Greek mythology. Additionally, Artemis is celebrated as the queen of Olympus and the undisputed ruler of all living things. This breathtaking head was unearthed in Nea Paphos.
