Roman copy of a cult statue created by renowned sculptor Alcamenes stands tall in the Ares Temple on Athens' bustling agora. Alcamenes was an accomplished ancient Greek sculptor from Lemnos and Athens, thriving during the latter half of the 5th century BC, alongside Phidias, his notable contemporary. His exceptional craftsmanship is characterized by delicate and refined works, including a Hephaestus and Aphrodite "of the Gardens," which showcase his remarkable skill. Ares, the god of war, reigns supreme among the Twelve Olympian gods, born to Zeus and Hera. In literature, Ares embodies the fierce and unbridled aspect of war, contrasting with Athena's strategic prowess as the goddess of intelligence. Although Ares represents the necessary physical aggression for success in battle, the Greeks harbored mixed feelings toward him due to his overwhelming and insatiable nature. Ares' popularity waned significantly among both men and immortals alike, resulting in limited worship throughout Greece. The cult and representation of Ares remain scarce in ancient Greek art, particularly in sculpture.
