Head of Aphrodite of the Capitoline type at The Louvre, Paris
myminifactory
This head of Aphrodite belongs to a statuary type renowned for its famous replica housed at the Capitoline Museum in Rome. The ornate richness of the hair is a treatment characteristic of the third or second centuries BC, which marks the likely era when Roman copies of the original Greek sculpture would have been created. The head has been severed from the Capitoline Aphrodite (99.350). The nose, lower lip, and end of the chin have undergone restoration. The surfaces exhibit slight damage and wear, resulting from post-Antique times. The hair drawn back above the sides of the face and the shape of the face itself display considerable resemblance to the Capitoline Aphrodite; the center of the topknot lacks the prominent "Herakles knot," and the locks of hair falling down to the shoulders have been reduced to a single small curl on the right side of the neck.
